03 : The Job Seeker's Eyes
Tae-seok, startled, looked around.
‘My wish actually came true?’
His wish was to pass the document screening for a major corporation, just once.
But now, some kind of illusion kept floating before his eyes.
[Your wish has been granted.]
Tae-seok waved his hand through the spot where the message was floating.
But the text showed no signs of disappearing.
‘What the hell is this? Am I seeing things? Have I finally lost it?’
But then… the letters slowly faded from his sight.
After experiencing the unbelievable phenomenon, Tae-seok looked around again.
And then, another message appeared.
[You have accessed the tutorial for The Path to Becoming a Regular Employee at Elseong Group.]
‘What! What is this!’
But the text continued.
[Would you like to proceed with the tutorial for The Path to Becoming a Regular Employee at Elseong Group?]
‘A tutorial? Is this a joke?’
Seeing the illusion, he spoke to the middle-aged man sitting next to him, smoking a cigarette.
“Excuse me, sir.”
“Want a cigarette?”
“No, that’s not it. I’m not crazy or anything, but… do you happen to see letters floating in front of my eyes?”
At that, the smoking middle-aged man suddenly cursed at Tae-seok.
“You crazy bastard. What kind of nonsense is that? Hey, punk! Drunk in broad daylight? Get lost!”
“…I’m sorry.”
Just as he thought. It wasn’t visible to others.
If it were, they would have been the ones to approach him in surprise.
But the text was still floating in front of Tae-seok’s eyes.
‘Only I can see it… Why me?’
He went to the restroom.
He looked in the mirror.
The letters weren't visible in the mirror's reflection.
It was just as he’d suspected.
‘Elseong Group, that’s where I wanted to go, but a tutorial?’
He was curious. Honestly, he thought he might be crazy.
He thought he might be dreaming.
Something that should only happen in movies, no, in novels or games, was happening to him. He couldn't bring himself to accept it.
But it was his dream.
To get a job at a major corporation.
And among them, Elseong Group, one of the top five in the country.
He shouted inwardly.
‘Fine. A tutorial! How do I do it?’
Then, the text that had been before his eyes slowly faded, and a new message appeared.
[The tutorial for the Regular Employee Course at Elseong Group has begun.]
- This tutorial will last for one year. If you give up during this period, you will lose all memories after accepting the quest.
‘Lose my memories? Are you serious?’
As if it understood Tae-seok’s thoughts, the system displayed another message.
- However, if you successfully complete the tutorial, your life will become incomparably more prosperous than it is now. Do you wish to continue with the tutorial?
[Main Quest: Proceed with the tutorial.]
[Proceed: Obtain new employee written evaluation and aptitude test questions.]
[Forfeit: Forfeit new employee position and delete memories.]
‘What kind of extreme quest is this? Wait a minute… aptitude test questions? Come to think of it, I haven’t prepared anything. Fine. Let’s do it. Let’s see this through to the end and find out if I’m the crazy one or you are!’
[Main Quest: Proceed with the tutorial / Complete]
[As a reward, you have acquired the Job (Job Seeker).]
[You have acquired the skill: Eyes of an Elseong Group Job Seeker (Rank: E).]
[This skill can only be used in buildings owned by Elseong Group.]
[Tip: If you purchase an aptitude test workbook from a store, you can identify potential questions with the Eyes of a Job Seeker.]
To Tae-seok, the quest from this mysterious message sounded completely absurd.
And Eyes of a Job Seeker? That was just ridiculous.
Still, just in case, he called out in his mind.
‘Eyes of a Job Seeker?’
At that, Tae-seok’s vision turned green.
Everything around him changed, as if he were wearing green sunglasses.
‘What is this? What’s going on?’
But a wave of fatigue washed over him, and another message appeared.
[Tip: Using the Eyes of a Job Seeker for an extended period will cause physical exhaustion. Use it only when necessary.]
It wasn’t funny at all. A green world…
‘Can I turn it off?’
His wish was granted as soon as he thought it.
The strain in his eyes suddenly lessened, and his green-tinted vision returned to normal.
‘Wow, this is insane. Absolutely insane.’
He was curious. Was this real, or was it a dream?
So, as soon as he finished work, Tae-seok headed to a bookstore.
The bookstore was crowded with people.
“Ma’am, which workbook should I buy for the Elseong Group aptitude test?”
Elseong Group had a whopping five thousand people pass the document screening.
For this group, the competition ratio for the document screening was about 5-to-1, but they eliminated a large number of candidates in the subsequent aptitude test.
It showed how much they valued personality and aptitude.
It meant they only wanted to accept candidates who were a good fit for the company.
But the woman at the bookstore shook her head.
“They say Elseong Group changes the questions every year. Who knows which publisher’s questions they’ll use this year. You either have to prepare for all of them or just pick one and go with it….”
Tae-seok shook his head.
Other people formed study groups, bought one book each, and shared them, but Tae-seok had no friends to do that with.
‘No. I have an ability. It said I can tell with that.’
Tae-seok once again called out the skill name in his mind.
‘Eyes of a Job Seeker!’
But this time, nothing happened.
‘What! Why?! What’s going on?!’
Then, the Tip came to mind.
[This skill can only be used inside buildings owned by Elseong Group.]
Haaah.
He let out a long sigh.
This damn skill! It had so many crappy requirements.
Annoyed, Tae-seok said.
“Ma’am.”
“Yes?”
“Give me all of them. All the aptitude test workbooks.”
12 books, 163,000 won.
The amount he earned in two days of work.
That’s why he didn’t tear off the plastic wrap.
He was thinking of returning them later, so he drove the company truck straight back to the construction site.
The security guards were blocking the way.
But it didn’t matter.
This was company property, too.
Parking in the dirt lot, an incredulous laugh escaped Tae-seok’s lips.
‘I don’t even know what the hell I’m doing anymore.’
But whether he believed the message or not, he had to test it.
So, Tae-seok opened his eyes.
‘Eyes of a Job Seeker!’
And then, the strange world that hadn’t activated before unfolded.
A world of green.
And some of the books Tae-seok had bought were sparkling.
2 out of the 12 books.
When he opened those two books, only certain problems were emitting a bright green light.
‘Is this it? Really? No way… is it real?’
200 questions, excerpted from the two books.
Tae-seok returned the other books to the bookstore and spent the entire night solving and memorizing those problems.
